Healing the Inner Child — What That Means Energetically

3 min read·Illaripa Lupa Hake

Healing the inner child is a term from psychology that has now reached many people. It describes the idea that early experiences — injuries, rejection, neglect, being overwhelmed — left traces in us as a child that still have effect today. What psychology describes has an energetic equivalent in Andean medicine. And that perspective opens a different access to healing. ## What Is the Inner Child?

The inner child is not a separate being inside you. It is parts — feelings, convictions, reaction patterns — that arose in childhood and still react as if it were then. When someone criticizes you and you react like a child afraid of being punished — that is the inner child. When you feel the same helplessness again and again in certain relationship constellations.

When rejection feels like annihilation. These are signs that early experiences are still active. ## What Healing the Inner Child Means Healing does not mean erasing the past. It means releasing the energy that is frozen in these experiences. And understanding the convictions that arose back then as an answer to a certain situation — not as a truth about you.

In Andean medicine we work with the concept of Hucha — heavy energy that settles in the energy field. Traumatic or repeatedly burdening experiences produce Hucha. This energy remains until it is released. The inner child carries this energy.

When it dissolves, the way we react changes. Not because we decided it — but because the energy that produced the reaction is no longer there. ## Why Talking Often Is Not Enough Many people have talked a great deal about their childhood. They understand why they are the way they are. And still the patterns repeat.

That is not because the talking was wrong. It is because understanding alone releases no energy. The pattern is not stored in thought. It is stored in the body, in the energy field, in the reactions that play out before the mind can respond.

That is where the work must begin. ## How Healing the Inner Child Really Works First: compassion for the part that experienced it. That is harder than it sounds. Many people have more understanding for others than for themselves as a child. Second: including the body level.

Where in the body do you feel it when the inner-child part is activated?

In the chest?

In the belly?

In the shoulders?

This area of the body is often the key to the energetic work. Third: releasing the energy directly. This can happen through breath work, through grounding, through the techniques of Andean medicine that work directly on the energy field. When the energy dissolves, the reaction changes — without willpower, without decision. ## What Changes When the Inner Child Heals Relationships change.

You react less from old patterns — and can react more from what is truly present right now. You need less confirmation from outside, because the inner stability grows stronger. You are calmer in situations that used to trigger you. This does not happen immediately and not all at once.

But it happens. If you wish to go deeper on this path, you will find a framework for it in a one-on-one session.
